Renowned author Scott Gilbert, professor at Swarthmore College, visits UW-Madison and shares insights into evolutionary biology and the ways biologists explore evolution. In this talk, Gilbert asks us to re-evaluate our traditional view of animals as "individuals." He notes that our cells are vastly outnumbered by the essential microbes living in our gut, and asks: are we not as reliant on symbiosis as the lichen, the familiar collaboration between fungi and algae?
