Description
Twenty-two RNs from two hospitals were interviewed using open-ended and focused questions. Nurses on inpatient units with a high number of falls receive frequent messages about reducing falls from multiple sources. Such messages produces increased anxiety and frustration in nurses, resulting in protective behavior for both the nurse and unit and restricts patient mobility. Conversely, nurses on inpatient units with low fall rates receive positive messages that they are meeting the hospital goal.
