“The Health Risk of Deleterious Mutations: 20 Years Later" by Alexey Kondrashov, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, University of Michigan

Event Details

Date
Wednesday, February 10, 2016
Time
7:50 p.m.
Description
In 1997, James Crow wrote a review of the adverse health effects of mutations. Kondrashov will talk about new insights obtained since then. DNA sequencing of mother-father-child trios produced more precise estimates of the mutation rates. Every human carries thousands of mildly deleterious alleles; sequencing the DNA of people suffering from a range of diseases showed that many are triggered by new mutations. We do not yet know what the phenotype would be of humans lacking deleterious alleles.
