Tropical crop production has diverse environmental impacts, including deforestation and carbon emission. Third-party sustainability certification seeks to reduce negative consequences by requiring that producers meet a set of standards. While certification is increasing, the environmental benefits of certification standard adoption remain largely untested. We evaluate how multi-stakeholder roundtable certification of palm oil and soybean is generating improvements in environmental outcomes.
